Dr. Robert Starks Elixir for Success

by Ira McComic

Among his many other certifications, Dr. Robert Stark is an FAA Designated Airworthiness Representative (DAR) and is experienced in guiding gyroplanes builders through the process of obtaining an airworthiness certificate for their new aircraft. Bob also is currently the only person in the US who is authorized to conduct the two-day course thatís required for a gyroplane Experiemental-Light Sport Aircraft (ELSA) repairman certificate.

Dr. Robert Stark, owner of Starkís Aviation in Olney, Texas, is celebrating 50 years in business. Since most small business don't last a tenth of that time, how has he managed to not only survive, but also grow his business, during those five decades? What's his elixar for success?

Dr. Bob doesn't answer those question directly, but when I listen to some of his stories and hear what other folks say about him, I get a good idea of how he's done it: he helps people fix problems. Now, that may seem simple enough in words but in practice it takes an extraordinary combination of intelligence, perseverance, and a willingness to grab opportunities when luck throws them your way.
